Compass owns a portfolio encompassing more than 3,000 units of railroad rolling stock, including covered hopper cars, tank cars, boxcars, flatcars, coal hoppers, woodchip gondolas, and log cars, which are leased to railroads and industrial users. Additionally, Compass advises institutional investors on the placement, management, and remarketing of railroad lease investments and arranges lease financings on behalf of selected clients.
The rail business unit, based in Chicago, focuses on acquiring and arranging lease investments, primarily relating to transportation equipment. Compass provides customized leasing services to finance railcars and locomotives, trailers and containers, and construction and maintenance-of-way equipment. Compass is a principal investor in most cases, but can also provide advisory and remarketing services where appropriate.
